Nightbirds by Kate J. Armstrong. An anticipated book. The Cover is the first thing that draws you in, as well as reading the inside Cover—the world of a magical world where a simple kiss can easily give magic. This is the gift of the Nightbirds. Of course, there are people like all world who don't believe there should be magic in the world, much less in the control of women. The season nightbirds are three girls: Matilde, Sayer, and Æsa. Each has different powers and personalities, which go with these nightbird names. Matilde, the goldfinch, is a child of the nobles living in Simta. Sayer the Ptarmigan, a thief, and Æsa The Nightingale, an island girl from Illan, remind me of Ireland, to be honest. These three girls are from different worlds, all within the land of the Eudean Republic.
Every night wealthy Simta comes to the nightbirds for a price to gain a nightbird's magic with a simple kiss. Soon A religious sect that believes magic is terrible, to begin with. It's considered women have these magical abilities to be witches, and such need to be destroyed and attacked. Lead these caged birds to spend their wings and discover that they aren't the only nightbirds. This leads to each of the girls growing in both powers and personalities. Armstong creates a beautiful and magical world that draws you in and doesn't wish to let you go. The politics of the book is current, much like our modern politics, like the rights of women, as well as talking about power, greed, and revenge. It also talks about the lasting power of loyal, unity, and the humanity that lives in all. I can't wait for the next book to show up magically.
Five out of five stars.
